Ashtanga Practice & Philosophy Intensive
with Christine Hoar
Saturday May 13, $75. Pre registration recommended.
11 to 3:30 pm. (bring a light bagged lunch, and a change of clothing)
Our yearly visit from this wise and wonderful woman, we look forward to having her share her wisdom and guide us through practice once again. This day is geared towards those who are looking to deepen their understanding of the system, both on the mat and out in life.
We are proud to present our friend and teacher Christine Hoar for exploration and practice of Ashtanga Yoga methodology. As the founder and director of Ashtanga Montauk in New York and Vermont's former Bristol Yoga, Christine brings a gentle, compassionate, light-hearted, yet powerful hands-on approach to Ashtanga Yoga. She is blessed and authorized to teach by her guru, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India, where she regularly returns for study.
The day will begin with a led Primary Series practice. The Primary Series (yoga chikitsa) serves as the very foundation for our physical practice, our sadhana. This Ashtanga system is an intelligently designed sequence of postures that offers each of us the opportunity to detoxify, purify, and strengthen the body. The Primary Series in particular aims to create neuromuscular alignment and strength and to begin to cleanse the organs. This guided class is an opportunity to deepen your practice and learn the correct vinyasa (breath-movement) system specific to the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Students will be guided with posture names and vinyasa counts, accompanied by helpful alignment tips and explanations. This class is appropriate for all students wanting to improve and grow in their Ashtanga Yoga practice.
Short break for lunch, followed by:
Why We Do Yoga – The Four Aims of Life
The four aims of life that are referred to in both Ayurveda and Yoga texts are dharma (duties, moral obligations), artha (wealth, means to pursue dharma), kaama (love and relationships) and moksha (liberation, freedom, self-realization). These are called the Purusharthas and are closely connected to the four Ashramas, the four stages of life. In this class, we will explore how we address each of these aims in order to live a full, joyful and meaningful life.
